The building completed in August 2013, consists of 18,000m2 of new build, facilitating both Research and undergraduate laboratories and support areas, Facility offices, Innovation teaching spaces, Active Learning spaces, 400 persons auditorium, 300 person restaurant and 5000m2 of future research space.  The building also provides, through a new atrium space, integration of 4 of the 5 Science building that make up the existing science centre.

Project consisted of Wet Biology & Support Labs, Physics & Teaching labs,  Auditorium, Restaurant and commercial Kitchen, Atrium, Toilets, Office & Meeting rooms.

Key aspects of the sustainable design features included Tri-Generation unit (600KWe 630KWt, 430KWch)Individual metering of each science department, extensive use of LED lighting and Daylight /presence detection controls, Isolation panels providing BMS the facility to switch ‘off’ non-critical M&E services in undergraduate Lab outside normal operating hours. Water saving sanitary wear. 

In addition particular emphasis focused on the continued development of the ventilation system representing the highest energy usage in this type of facility.  The design strategy implemented in previous projects formed the starting point of a dynamic design solution that incorporated the heat energy of the Tri-generation and extensive deployment of Heat recovery on all heat sources throughout the building, which ultimately enabled the achievement of a BREEAM excellent certification.

The building has a total area of 1300m2 and was officially opened in December 2013. The building combine’s the expertise of systems engineering, mathematical and computational approaches with state of the art technology platforms.

Project consisted of 500m2 of wet Laboratory’s, Computational, Offices & Meeting rooms. Project includes substantial energy efficiency design including lab ventilation, Heat recovery from plant, High efficiency condensing boilers, Solar Thermal, use of non-potable water sources for toilet flushing and Low Energy lighting and controls and the selection of low energy equipment and solutions throughout.

UCD Science Lecture (HUB) – Refurbishment.

The building has a total area of 8000m2 and accommodates lecture capacity for approx. 2000 students.  A key challenge of the project was the requirement to complete the refurbishment whilst the building remained in use during the academic calendar.

The project consisted of the full replacement of M&E services throughout.  The existing Lecture Theatres, Toilets and circulation areas where totally refurbished over a number of phases. Whilst other sections of the building where redesign to accommodate new offices, Active learning environments, Meeting rooms, Teaching spaces, toilets and Innovation centre.  

Project includes substantial energy efficiency design features including, Heat recovery from plant, District heating, use of non-potable water sources for toilet flushing,  Photovoltaic installation and the selection of low energy equipment and solutions throughout to achieve a BREEAM excellent certification.

UCD Science Centre Fit-out

The science Centre Fit-out project represents the final phase of the new UCD science centre. The fit-out over three levels (ground, third and Fourth floors) has a total area of 5600m2 of mixed use research facility.  Phase 1 of the project completed in June 2014 consists of 1800m2 of contemporary office space.  A Key feature of the design solution was the exposure of the building services throughout this phase of the project.  This aspect of the design results in the added requirement for the mechanical and electrical services to contribute to the visual environment.  The final phase of the building is scheduled for completion August 2014. ​

Project includes substantial energy efficiency design features throughout including the selection of low energy equipment and solutions to achieve a BREEAM excellent certification.

UCD Science South Phase 2 – Refurbishment / New Build

The building has a total area of 4000m2, completed in July 2014 and represents the final phase of the redevelopment of the Science Chemistry building or Science South.  The project consisted of the refurbishment of the existing science A3 building and a new 4 storey extension.

The building accommodates both research and undergraduate Laboratories, support areas, offices, Lecture theatres and a chemical storage and handling area for the entire science centre.

Key sustainable features of the design include: Use of campus District Heating system, Manifold Air systems, LED Lamp selection, PIR/Photocell Lighting Controls, VSD’s selection on All Motor’s and pumps, Laboratory Power/Water/Air Local Isolation Controls.
